Weaving together elements of magical realism, shadow play, mime and live percussion, ‘TIN BUCKET DRUM’ gives a fresh twist to the traditional conventions of African story telling. Masterfully told by Ntando Cele with the percussive support of Wake Mahlobo ‘TIN BUCKET DRUM’ follows the story of Nomvula- the Little Drummer Girl. Born into a silent dictatorship with a revolutionary heart-beat. It doesn’t take long before she is singled out by the authorities as a ‘weapon of mass disturbance’ and banished to the great wells out the outskirts of the town. Now she must fight back to claim her rightful place in the community and lift the drought that cripples her village. Armed with a tin bucket and pair of drum sticks will Nomvula manage to break the silence for once and for all?
‘Tin Bucket Drum in its close and minutely explored world, takes a broad swipe at age old global systems of restriction enforced for personal gain by those in power, and the way these restrictions affect the man on the ground. Above all it looks, rather optimistically at the power of creativity.
Critically acclaimed with standing ovations at the Grahamstown and Hilton Arts festivals .Winning the Audience Vote for Best Production at MUSHO 2007 and recently featured as ‘The Star’, ‘Pretoria Times’, The Herald and ‘The Witnesses number one pick of the Grahamstown Festival Fringe 2007.
